Preparing for surgery

What to do in the days before

Sources checked: September 2026

The short version

In the days before surgery, you'll typically get instructions about medications, eating and drinking, and what to bring — and it helps to arrange support for the day of and right after.

  • Confirm which medications and supplements to pause beforehand (including blood thinners) — never stop a prescribed medication without checking first
  • Follow eating and drinking instructions exactly, usually nothing after midnight the night before
  • Arrange a ride home and someone to help for the first day or two
  • Pack loose, front-buttoning clothing and comfortable shoes for the day of surgery
  • Prepare your questions in advance — it can be hard to think of them once you're there

It's normal to feel anxious in the days beforehand. Many people find it helps to have a written list of instructions rather than relying on memory.

Questions you may want to ask

  • Which of my current medications should I pause, and when?

  • What time should I arrive, and how long should I expect to be there?
