Exercise during treatment

Staying active safely

Sources checked: September 2026

The short version

Light to moderate physical activity is often encouraged during treatment, when cleared by your care team, and may help with fatigue, mood, and strength — the right amount and type varies by person and treatment stage.

Once cleared by your care team, gentle and regular movement — such as walking, stretching, or light strength work — is often encouraged during treatment, and some research suggests it may help with fatigue, mood, and physical function.

This isn't about pushing through exhaustion — the goal is movement that feels sustainable, adjusted around low-count days, surgery recovery, or how you're feeling that day.

Questions you may want to ask

  • What kinds of activity are safe for me right now?

  • Are there restrictions I should know about after surgery or during a specific treatment phase?
